China takes its first step towards a celebration for the ages at Expo 2020

Pavilion’s groundbreaking marks less than a year to the largest celebration of Chinese culture and ambition ever held in the Arab World

The World’s Greatest Show is less than a year away, and while visitors can expect to be dazzled and delighted by a packed calendar of events, gastronomic experiences, design festivals, cultural excursions and more, a highlight of the Expo experience is sure to be the China Pavilion.

Housed on a 4,000 sqm site, the lantern-shaped pavilion broke ground last week, and will bring to life more than 5,000 years of Chinese culture including the advent of paper, gunpowder and the compass.

It will also highlight the country’s fast developing leadership role in future-shaping technology and mega infrastructure projects including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), 5G, autonomous vehicles that can share data and make complex decisions, and the world’s largest radio satellite built to detect signs of extra-terrestrial life.

China’s pavilion at Expo 2020 will be among the largest at the six-month spectacle, and a sign of how the country’s relationship with the UAE continues to grow.

The world’s second largest economy is the UAE’s third biggest trading partner. Bilateral trade between both countries is expected to reach $70 billion in 2019 – the Comprehensive Strategic Agreement signed during President Xi Jinping’s 2018 visit has outlined a plan to increase the value of trade to $100 billion by 2020 and $200 billion by 2030.

Chinese tourist arrivals in the UAE exceed one million each year and approximately 3.5 million travellers transit through the UAE per year. Many of the latter are expected to extend their stay in the UAE during February and March when the Chinese Year of the Ox festivities at Expo will be in full swing.

In February 2021, Expo will celebrate the Year of the Ox with drummers, traditional dancers, and firecrackers welcoming visitors; evenings will see the site bathed in red light and a complete site takeover during Chinese New Year that will include red envelopes, ‘spot the lantern’ games, and Expo 2020 adorned with floating, fixed, held and flying lanterns of all kinds.

Music, dance and food will unite visitors with stunning visuals and new experiences, providing millions of people from around the world with a taste of the cultural extravaganza that will be a never-before-seen celebration of Chinese culture in the Arab World at Expo 2020.
