If we want to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy the beach on a hot afternoon, we need to protect it from harmful foreign objects, such as plastic.
With this goal in mind, more than 100 employees and family members from Expo 2020 Dubai skipped a swim to beat the summer heat and instead volunteered their time and hands to help beat plastic pollution at the beach.
This is all part of the UN World Environment Day on 5 June, which this year is all about #BeatPlasticPollution.
Here is an idea of just how much plastic the world wastes*:
- - Each year, 13 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the oceans, which is equal to dumping a full garbage truck every minute
- - In the past decade we produced more plastic than in the entire past century
- - We buy 1 million plastic bottles a minute
At Expo 2020, we are working alongside major organisations, social innovators from around the world and everyday folks to help preserve the planet. Sustainability is one our key subthemes and we aim to educate and inspire millions to change their habits and benefit the environment.
To be part of the solution, all you have to do is give a little bit of your time.
