A runway-style showcase by three Emirati fashion labels has dazzled the design community at the final of a competition to dress more than 30,000 Expo 2020 Dubai volunteers and team members.
By Laha (Hamda Abbas, Sara Mustafa and Zainab AlShaikh), ARSHYS (Arshia Alam Khan) and Twisted Roots (Latifa Al Gurg) presented uniform designs mixing contemporary chic with the UAE’s rich heritage during the event at Expo 2020’s newly opened House of Volunteers.
The trio was selected after Expo invited designers from across the nation to submit creations reflecting its theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and its subtheme of Sustainability, with eco-friendly concepts and practices assessed more favourably.
Entrants were also asked to incorporate elements of UAE culture into practical, weather appropriate, easily identifiable and modest uniforms.
The three finalists were each given AED 50,000 to create samples of their men’s and women’s lines, which will include top, bottom, jacket, hat, bag, tie, scarf, kandora, ghitra, abaya, shayla and an accessory.
Guests at the showcase included experts from leading organisations in the fashion industry, including Dubai Design District, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, Fashion Forward Dubai and Dubai Design and Fashion Council, all of which have played a significant role in supporting the competition.
The designers participated in a Q&A after the runway show, detailing their creative process to a panel chaired by Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau.
The panel, which also included Manuel Arnaut, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Arabia, will reveal its decision later this year after a comprehensive evaluation.
The winning uniform will be worn by the Expo 2020 workforce during the six months of Expo from 20 October, 2020 to 10 April, 2021, becoming an enduring symbol of the largest event ever to be staged in the Arab world.
