Worker Welfare - Expo 2020 Dubai
    calendar 2 May 2019

A big ‘thank you’ to our site workers

More than 2,000 site workers enjoy fun-filled event highlighting Expo’s goal of raising worker welfare standards across the construction industry

Sports, gifts, performances and a parade highlighted an action-packed day of festivities as Expo 2020, in collaboration with Dubai Police and Dubai Sports Council, honoured its site workers for their hard work in making the vision of Expo 2020 a reality.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, attended the event where she expressed her gratitude to all of Expo 2020’s 40,000 site workers.

Dubai Sports Council instructors kicked off the activities, leading more than 2,000 workers in an hour of yoga and aerobics. Contractors then banded staff together to flex their muscles in an eight-team tug of war competition, followed by a fast-paced football match with members of Dubai Police.

A skydiving display by Dubai Police parachutists, a 70-man motorcycle parade and entertainment and flowers courtesy of local schoolchildren topped a fun-filled morning. The event capped a week of health and safety training, and formed part of Expo 2020’s ‘Better Together’ Worker Welfare strategy. Underpinned by the core values of care, respect and pride, this strategy aims to influence the wider operations of contractors and advance worker welfare standards throughout the industry for years to come.

HE Reem Al Hashimy said: “Hosting a World Expo for the first time in the Arab world represents a unique opportunity for us to make a positive impact, collaborating with our stakeholders to shine the spotlight on the importance of worker welfare. Today’s event is a great opportunity to express our gratitude to all our site workers who are essential to making the vision of Expo 2020 a reality.”

Workers who participated in the sporting competitions were awarded trophies, medals and gift vouchers, and every worker at the event received a complimentary phone card from Etisalat, Expo 2020’s Official Telecommunications and Digital Services Partner.

The largest event ever to be held in the Arab world, and the first World Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region, Expo 2020 will open its doors for six months on 20 October 2020 under the theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
