Feature in a tapestry of sound at the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai
UK Pavilion invites anyone, anywhere, to be part of a crowd-sourced composition showcased at the Expo

The UK pavilion is inviting
people from around the world to tap a beat, hum a note, or belt out a rhythm
and take part in creating a tapestry of sound as part of its experience at Expo
2020.
Conceived by lead designer Es Devlin OBE and brand experience agency Avantgarde, submissions from people of any age, playing any instrument, will be woven by sound designers Polyphonia into a seven-minute long ‘soundscape’. It will be a tribute to virtual choirs, orchestras and music sessions that symbolise humanity’s resilience, creativity and optimism that have flourished throughout the global pandemic.
By inviting voices from Bangkok to Brighton and instruments from bagpipes to sitars, the crowd-sourced composition will echo the pavilion’s goal of honouring the range and diversity of ages, ethnicities and genders in the UK, reflected in its theme ‘Innovating for a shared future’.
With traditional instruments melding with artificial intelligence and generative synthesisers, the sonic journey will also highlight the melting pot of influences and genres that have carried British music to the world, and built a reputation for the UK in spatial audio design.
During Expo 2020, the soundscape will be played in the Choral Space, the heart of the UK Pavilion, which will be illuminated by glowing words donated by the millions of visitors expected at the pavilion.
To become part of the soundscape, collaborators are invited to record themselves singing or playing one of eight different, pre-composed parts – four melodies, two instrumentals or two simple rhythms and upload their audio (which can be recorded via cell phone) into a simple online form.
