Connecting communities through the arts
Communicate between cultures and across time through the arts. Merging the contemporary connotations of "urban" with the traditional ones of "freej" (which means neighbourhood in colloquial Gulf Arabic), My Urban Freej is a nod to the UAE's multi-culturalism and a reminder that the arts – and Expo 2020 Dubai – are for everyone!
Leveraging the power of the arts as a universal language with the UAE as a canvas, My Urban Freej enables diverse communities to join us in welcoming the world through a series of public art installations. The programme pairs professional artists with those who are passionate about the arts. Together, they will create inspiring public art by working with the communities who'll share how they wish to be represented.
My Urban Freej has joined forces with 10 local and international artists to host a series of workshops in collaboration with university arts departments and youth centres across the UAE – and you don't have to be a professional artist to take part.
Workshops will run between February and May 2020 focused on graffiti, street art, 3D installations, calligraphy and concept design, and are open to anyone 18 and above.
A series of 30 installations will transform the landscape of the UAE into a public art space. Our vision is to create installations across the cities, towns and suburbs of the seven emirates, so that communities throughout the country have the chance to engage with art. Could your Freej be the one? Stay tuned!
Are you up for a challenge? For the fun-seekers out there, we'd like to send you on a quest to visit each of the 30 artistic installations across the UAE... but don't worry we'll be giving you a map to help you on your mission. Watch this space to know more about when and where it'll be.
As an incredible grand culmination to My Urban Freej, the final masterpieces will be displayed on the world's largest indoor projection screen in Al Wasl Plaza for millions of visitors to experience art in a truly memorable way.
