The ‘Czech Spring’ pavilion will showcase technology that could turn desert sand into fertile land, as well as offering a taste of Czech food in a dedicated restaurant
The Czech Republic has unveiled a uniquely organic look for its Expo 2020 Dubai Pavilion, which will bring to life its ‘Czech Spring’ concept.
The striking building features a series of fluid lines that flow around rectangular exhibition spaces. It was created by doctoral students from CTU Prague’s Faculty of Architecture, who work for architecture firm Formosa.
Located in Expo 2020’s Sustainability Themed District, the pavilion theme is intended to evoke feelings of the most popular season in Czech Republic – spring – a time when the country is in full bloom. It also symbolises the renowned Czech water springs, highlighting the growing scarcity of clean water.
Central to the Czech Republic’s involvement in Expo 2020 will be a demonstration of its innovative Solar Air Water Earth Resource (S.A.W.E.R.) system, which uses solar energy to collect water from air, using a photobioreactor and compost tea. Scientists have successfully used this water to produce an algae that helps grass, herbs and crops grow in desert sand.
The Czech scientists aims to use the technology to grow olive and palm trees in the UAE’s desert during the Expo. Given the agricultural challenges in the UAE and the region, this could be a real benefit beyond 2020.
The pavilion will also feature a Czech restaurant, a massive installation of designer glass and a rotating exhibition to help attract repeat visitors.
