Expo 2020 Dubai - World Water Day
calendar 22 Mar 2019

Drop by drop, it counts

Expo 2020 is going smart and sustainable with its water-saving and greening methods

Water conservation is front of mind at Expo 2020 Dubai, with a ‘smart site’, clever irrigation methods and the thoughtful use of native and adaptive plant species combining to ensure it is one of the most water-efficient World Expos ever.

Alongside other sustainability strategies and technology, the Expo 2020 site will require less than half the water for parks and landscaping features compared to typical commercial developments in the city.

During the construction phase, Expo is already surpassing the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s benchmark by more than 50 percent.

All water used for landscaping and greening is treated sewage effluent, which is rich in growth nutrients. This is ideal for the 220,000 sqm Expo 2020 nursery, where hundreds of plant, tree and shrub species are being nurtured. These water-saving horticultural gems include the Salam bush (Acacia ehrenbergiana), the ghaf tree (Prosopis cineraria), various date palm varieties, the perennial woody plant Rimth (Haloxylon salicornum) and the Frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra).

Add in smart metering technologies for monitoring ground water levels and reducing water consumption and leaks, and you’re talking about creating healthier, resilient and sustainable microclimates within the Expo 2020 site with a markedly lower eco footprint than the rest of the city.

Expo 2020’s commitment to the sustainable management of water, both in the lead-up to and during the six months of the event, is aligned with the objectives of World Water Day, marked on 22 March.

Expo’s efforts to minimise water use also directly contribute to one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations – to “ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.

Expo 2020’s overarching sustainability strategy aims for the event to be a catalyst for change across the nation, the region and around the world.
