Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has spoken of his excitement at celebrating Diwali with the world at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Kapur, who directed Mr India and the Oscar-winning Elizabeth, serves as an advisor to Expo 2020 with a focus on content. He visited the UAE this week to discuss ideas, meet the media and see the fast-evolving Expo site for himself.
He said: “We’re looking to create something fantastic on Diwali night (in November 2020). It’s a celebration of light, which is a really international idea, and we’re creating a big show at Al Wasl Plaza. I love Diwali, and it’s great that thousands will celebrate it here at Expo 2020 – not just Indians, but people from all over the world.”
Kapur, currently preparing a feature film on the life of Sheikh Zayed, also met composer A.R. Rahman during his time in Dubai. The two are considering ways to work together, including a song for the UAE.
During his visit to the Expo site, Kapur described it as “a place of discovery”, adding “Expo 2020 is going to be full of wonder and full of dreams.”
He also discussed his optimism that the World’s Greatest Show will provide a global platform for collaboration between people and nations, in line with its theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
Kapur said: “This Expo is about people getting together to address the issues that our planet is facing. The UAE is bringing people from all over the globe to come here, communicate and create a new world.”
