Students envision future cities at Next Gen World Majlis

Expo 2020 Dubai’s first ever Next Gen World Majlis saw school students from across the UAE come together for a lively conversation about future cities

Have you ever wondered what our future cities will look like? Tomorrow’s urban spaces will be shaped by today’s youth, which is why Expo 2020 Dubai invited school students from across the UAE to share their insights as part of our first ever Next Gen World Majlis.

Based on the Emirati and Arab tradition of the majlis – a meeting space that enables people of all cultures and backgrounds to gain fresh perspectives and share new ideas – Expo 2020’s World Majlis series is designed to address 21st century challenges through conversations that matter.

Seventeen students from both public and private schools took part in Expo’s inaugural youth-focused World Majlis, titled ‘CityZen 2030: Gen Z and the Future of Cities’, sharing ideas that could help improve urban living for generations to come.

Participants agreed that if future cities are to prosper, they must encourage cultural exchange, facilitate sustainable living, empower their inhabitants, and promote self-awareness and collaboration. Students were also confident that advanced technology would serve to enhance human connectivity and interaction within the urban communities of tomorrow.

Rashed Abdu Khalil, a Grade 10 student at Al Jazeera Al Hamra School in Ras Al Khaimah and a participant in the Next Gen World Majlis, said: “I’ve been inspired by the World Majlis because it showed that young people from different cultures and backgrounds can unite and have meaningful discussions about real things.”

Part of Expo 2020’s World Majlis initiative, the Next Gen World Majlis was hosted in collaboration with the Expo School Programme. Fifty World Majlis sessions will take place in the lead-up to and during the next World Expo, including six that will be youth-led.
