Nature-inspired Dutch Pavilion will unite water, food and energy

The Dutch Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will house a ‘miniature world’ that connects our most precious natural resources, providing visitors with an intense sensory experience

The Netherlands may be best known for its flat, lowland vistas, but its pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will be distinctly vertical.

The Dutch Pavilion will produce water, energy and food through a cone-shaped ‘vertical farm’ and other sustainable technologies, while its circular climate system will deliver an intense sensory experience for visitors.

Inspired by the theme of ‘Uniting Water, Energy and Food’, the pavilion will house a ‘miniature world’ – or biotope – in which the planet’s most precious natural resources will be intrinsically linked and the climate will be naturally controlled.

The building itself will be made from locally sourced construction materials, minimising the environmental impact of transportation. Its interior will be exclusively fitted out with rented elements, which can be returned or reused on other projects post-Expo.

The Netherlands will use the next World Expo as a platform to showcase home-grown innovations that can be applied in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region to help create a greener, more sustainable future.

Located in Expo 2020’s Sustainability Thematic District, the Dutch Pavilion was designed in collaboration with V8 architects, Kossmann.dejong, Witteveen+Bos and Expomobilia.

The Netherlands is the latest country to reveal the design and theme of its pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. More are expected to follow in the coming months.
