Show off your artistic flair at Expo 2020 Dubai, with a new competition to design the drinking fountains across the site.
Designers, architects, artists and other UAE-based creatives are invited to submit their ideas for Sabeel 2020, an Expo initiative in collaboration with Dubai-based Art Jameel, an organisation that supports heritage, education and the arts. Innovative thinkers with a strong connection to the UAE are also encouraged to participate.
A sabeel is a neighbourhood water fountain that quenches the thirst of travellers and passers-by. Visitors to Expo 2020 will be able to access water through the 45-plus fountains onsite, reflecting the UAE’s spirit of hospitality and its thriving creative community. The sabeels will also live on post-Expo as part of the future city of District 2020.
Up to three winning designs will be selected by a jury that includes Marjan Faraidooni, Chief Pavilions and Exhibitions Officer at Expo 2020 Dubai, before being developed and reproduced throughout the Expo site. Each winner will also receive AED 100,000 in prize money.
The contest draws upon Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ as well as its subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. It also supports the #Hayyakum2020 programme by spreading excitement and pride throughout the nation ahead of the largest event ever staged in the Arab world.
The Sabeel 2020 initiative also includes three commissioned drinking fountains from UAE-based artists, to be announced alongside the competition winners in November 2019.
