Belgium to showcase ‘most creative inventors’, says Commissioner General

Work starts on ark-inspired country pavilion – designed to produce more energy than it consumes

Visitors to the Belgium Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will experience the best of Belgian creativity, the country’s Commissioner General has promised.

Welcomed by Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director, Expo 2020 Dubai Bureau, His Excellency Patrick Vercauteren Drubbel visited the Expo 2020 site for the pavilion’s ground-breaking ceremony as part of a wider Belgium delegation that included the Ambassador of Belgium to the UAE, His Excellency Peter Claes.

“Being part of the Expo 2020 family gives Belgium renewed energy,” said His Excellency Vercauteren Drubbel. “As an Ambassador, I have always enjoyed being in touch with the other parts of the world, creating incredible projects together.

“There is no better way to turn a good idea into real progress for millions of people,” he added.

“Trying to imagine how your grandchildren will move in the future is not obvious, correct? Mobility is often considered slightly differently from what we know today. The Belgium pavilion will reverse your thinking; visitors will be able to experience what our most creative inventors have in mind.”

Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali said: “With its self-built country pavilion in Expo 2020’s Mobility District, Belgium will be able to showcase its latest innovations in bringing people, goods and ideas together – offering visitors a glimpse into the Belgium of the future.

“While located in the Mobility District, the Belgium Pavilion also boasts impressive green credentials – in line with Expo 2020’s key sub-theme of Sustainability. We look forward to the Belgium Pavilion’s impressive designs coming to life over the coming year as we approach our 20 October 2020 opening date.”

Located in the heart of Mobility District, Belgium’s country pavilion will draw on renewable resources to feed its energy needs – promising to produce more energy than it consumes.

Covered in lush greenery, the ark-inspired building will feature natural light and ventilation, renewable energies and the smart use of water.

An exhibition trail, shops selling Belgian souvenirs, a business centre and places to taste the country’s culinary specialties, including its world-famous fries – known as frietjes – will also feature.
