    Italy pavilion pays homage to beauty as final design revealed

    Italy shares details of how its Expo 2020 pavilion will take shape at a One Year to Go event in Matera, Italy

    From fashion to fast cars, and plenty in between, Italy is known the world over for some of the world’s most loved brands. And at Expo 2020 Dubai, the country intends to make the most of its penchant for stunning design.

    At a One Year to Go event held in Matera to mark 365 days until Expo 2020 opens on 20 October 2020, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, shared final designs as well as details of what visitors could expect at Italy’s pavilion at the largest event to be held in the Arab World.

    The Event was also attended by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates. Designed by a Carlo Ratti, Italo Rota, Matteo Gatto and F&M Ingegneria, the Italy’s pavilion will be inspired by its theme ‘Beauty Unites People’. The façade will be marked by a roof constructed out of the overturned hulls of three ships and will make recycling central to its design; after the Expo will be transported back to Italy and re-used toward a permanent structure.

    Reconfigurable design will also be a core aspect of programming at the pavilion. Using elements of Italian cultural and creative identity as well as innovative construction, public spaces at the pavilion will invite visitors to experience cultural sustainability. This includes using algae native to Italy to seize carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (by millions of visitors) and metabolise it into oxygen.

    Located between the Opportunity and Sustainability Thematic Districts, the pavilion will also explore the circular economy and digital architecture. An estimated five million visitors are expected to walk through its doors during the six-month event.
