Malcolm Taylor, who broke news of Dubai’s Expo 2020 bid win, dies aged 66

Expo 2020 mourns Malcolm Taylor, the much respected broadcaster who broke the news of Dubai’s 2020 World Expo bid win

Malcolm Taylor, the hugely respected Dubai Eye radio broadcaster who was the first reporter to share news of the UAE’s 2020 World Expo bid win in 2013, has died at the age of 66.

Taylor joined the Expo 2020 Dubai bid team in Paris for the vote against major cities from Russia, Turkey and Brazil and immediately rushed out of the conference centre on November 27 six years ago to spread the glad tidings with an ecstatic nation.

He continued to follow the Expo story with a focus and dedication that almost became a running joke in the ARN newsroom such was his passion for a project that he fervently believed was one of the best things that had ever happened to his beloved Dubai.

Taylor regularly visited the Expo 2020 site in Dubai South over the years to check up on progress first hand and only a few weeks ago, accompanied the rest of the Business Breakfast team for an outside broadcast while interviewing a string of Expo spokespeople.

Expo issued a statement after his passing became public. “It is with great sadness that we learn of Dubai Eye broadcaster Malcolm Taylor’s passing. He has been an ardent believer of what we are creating at Expo 2020 from the bid days in 2013 and will be much missed. We will carry his spirit and love for Dubai to October 2020 and beyond.”

An official statement from Arabian Radio Network, which is the parent company of Dubai Eye, said: “Our beloved ARN friend and colleague Malcolm Taylor sadly passed away.

“The entire ARN family is holding Malcolm’s friends and family in their thoughts at this time.”

Taylor first arrived in the region in 1967 when his parents were posted to Bahrain. He came to Dubai in 1972 when he and friends swam across the creek with a rowing abra containing their clothes close behind.

Before joining Dubai Eye in 2005, he had a successful career in a number of blue chip companies including Dow Jones and Reuters.

During his time with the Business Breakfast, the show Taylor jointly hosted with Brandy Scott and Richard Dean won numerous awards including the ‘Middle East Breakfast Show of the Year’ at the international RadioCast awards.
