International superstars and 12,000 fans watch Expo 2020 cricket final

Laing O’Rourke beat CoEX at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, attended by superstar players Yuvraj Singh and Shahid Afridi

Cricket greats Yuvraj Singh and Shahid Afridi joined 12,000 enthusiastic spectators to see Laing O’Rourke triumph over CoEX in the Expo 2020 Dubai cricket tournament final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The annual tournament forms part of Expo 2020 Dubai’s strategy to advance worker welfare and health, safety, quality and environment (HSQE) standards, known as ‘Better Together’ – a programme based on the core values of Care, Respect and Pride.

Last year’s runners-up Laing O’Rourke batted first and posted an imposing total of 226 for 8 in their 20 overs – and it proved too much for their opponents CoEX, who were all out for 79. Mohammed Irfan led the way for Laing O’Rourke, smashing an extraordinary 15-ball half century on his way to a tournament-winning 76 runs off 22 balls.

World Cup-winning Indian all-rounder Singh and former Pakistan captain Afridi gave the teams pre-match pep talks, as well as interacting with the crowd during the match and participating in the closing ceremony.

Yuvraj Singh said: “It was good to see so much enthusiasm, involvement and love for the game of cricket, and heartwarming to see so many people coming out to cheer on both teams and supporting the aim of the competition – celebrating the workers of Expo 2020 Dubai.”

Yuvraj Singh is a former India international who was Man of the Tournament in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, where India triumphed, and in 2007 became the first-ever batsman to hit six sixes from one over during a T20 International match. Shahid Afridi, nicknamed ‘Boom Boom’, is a former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team who has hit the most sixes in ODI cricket.

The annual Expo 2020 Dubai cricket tournament celebrates the hard work of everyone working to deliver the 4.38 sqkm site in Dubai South safely, securely and efficiently. The 2019-2020 edition of the tournament commenced in November 2019 and saw 32 teams enter from Expo’s consultants and contractors battle it out for a chance to take home the trophy. Laing O’Rourke’s success was all the sweeter for them after the coveted trophy was snatched away from them on the last ball of the final last year by Al-Futtaim Construction.
