If you’re walking around with a smile on your face and the feeling that life is getting better all the time, then don’t worry – you’re not alone. In fact, there’s a great degree of positivity and optimism about our future, from all corners of the planet, according to the results of the first Global Optimism Outlook Survey, commissioned by Expo 2020 Dubai.
Conducted by YouGov, the survey tracked priorities for the future, looking at sustainability, economic growth, technology, travel and more – and found that people around the world are unified in a mission for a more collaborative, inclusive, tolerant, clean and stable planet.
More than 20,000 people across 23 countries were surveyed, broken down by geographic region, gender, employment, marital status and income. And it appears the majority of the world is closely aligned when it comes to the key issues facing the planet’s future — viewing it as a higher priority than anything personal, economic or technology-related.
Findings show the importance of the health of the planet, inclusivity and access to education significantly outweighs for most surveyed the desire for improved technologies, connectivity speeds and robotics. Open dialogue, communication and collaboration between individuals and communities were also priorities for the future.
Plastic-free oceans dwarfed developments in cloud computing and e-commerce as a global desire, with a global average of 60 per cent, more than 30 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively.
The results also highlight that nine in 10 respondents believe individuals and communities can shape their own future – rather than governments or giant corporations - through greater knowledge sharing, communication and collaboration, ahead of technological advances.
More than half the global respondents also believe that open dialogue and coming together to exchange ideas is essential to unlocking opportunity in the future.
Across the board, males generally valued technological solutions as a higher priority — with AI, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and e-commerce ranking above green issues.
Females led the charge for green issues and community, consistently ranking open dialogue (51 per cent), tolerance (53 per cent), collaboration (56 per cent), stable climate conditions (56 per cent), and zero waste (52 per cent) higher than their male counterparts.
Females also showed a preference for more access to education, knowledge-gathering and learning (65 per cent), compared to males (59 per cent), as well as 100 per cent safe travel (55 per cent to 50 per cent, respectively).
With just over one year to go before the next World Expo opens its doors, 83 per cent of respondents said they were interested in attending, demonstrating a significant appetite for the event from countries across six continents.
